Don't attack immediately; instead, follow the ninja's moves to avoid getting caught off guard.
There will be a lot of adversaries around the hostage on some levels. To finish the main goal, kill them rapidly.
Use a katana on foes that are close by and a shuriken on those that are far away or when you want to take down a lot of enemies rapidly.
